Your website isn’t a business card—it’s a sales machine (or it should be). If it’s not converting, it’s because your visitors don’t know what to do next. Fix this by making your phone number obvious, adding clear CTAs, and proving you’re the best with social proof.

Why Your Website Isn’t Bringing In Work (And How To Fix It)

Let’s cut the fluff.

If your website isn’t bringing in leads, phone calls, or sales, it’s broken.

I don’t care how pretty it looks.
I don’t care how much you paid for it.
I don’t care if your cousin built it for “mates rates.”

If it’s not bringing in work, it’s just a digital business card floating in the internet void.

So today, I’m going to show you exactly why your website is failing—and more importantly—how to fix it so it starts pulling in work like a Dyson on steroids.

Problem #1: Your Website Isn’t Built to Sell

Here’s the truth:

Most websites are built like brochures, not salespeople.

You land on them and what do you see?

  • A fancy logo
  • A generic “Welcome to our website” line
  • A photo of someone shaking hands
  • A menu full of stuff nobody cares about

That’s not a business website. That’s a digital paperweight.

Your website should sell. Period.

It should:

  • Grab attention in 3 seconds
  • Clearly say what you do
  • Make people trust you
  • Tell them what to do next
  • Make it stupid easy to get in touch

If it’s not doing all that, it’s not working.

Problem #2: You’re Not Saying the Right Things

People don’t care about your mission statement. They don’t care that you’ve been in business since 1984.

They care about what you can do for THEM.

That means your copy (the words on your site) should be all about:

  • Solving their problem
  • Speaking their language
  • Making them feel like you get it

Weak Copy:

“We’re a family-run plumbing business offering a wide range of services.”

Strong Copy:

“Blocked toilet ruining your day? We’ll be there in under an hour—no mess, no stress.”

See the difference?

Speak to the pain. Sell the result.

Problem #3: No Clear Call-To-Action (CTA)

Want to confuse your visitors?
Give them no clear next step.

I see this all the time:

  • No “Call Now” button
  • No form
  • No offer
  • No direction

You have to guide people like you’re leading them through a jungle.

Tell them exactly what to do:

  • Call now for a free quote
  • Book your appointment today
  • Get your [problem] fixed in 24 hours

Big button. Bright colour. Zero confusion.

Problem #4: It’s Not Mobile-Friendly

Over 70% of people visit your site from their phone. If your site looks like a hot mess on mobile—tiny text, slow loading, buttons that don’t work—they’re gone faster than your last customer when you mentioned VAT.

Mobile-friendly = more leads.

Use big buttons. Simple layouts. Click-to-call phone numbers.

And for the love of business, make it load in under 3 seconds.

Problem #5: No Trust Builders

Nobody buys from strangers.

You need to show people they can trust you—before they ever pick up the phone.

Here’s how you do it:

  • ★★★★★ Google reviews
  • Before & after photos
  • Case studies or job stories
  • “Trusted by” logos (if you’re part of Checkatrade, SafeContractor, etc.)
  • A guarantee or promise

People want to know:
👉 “Have you done this before?”
👉 “Will you do a good job?”
👉 “Will I regret calling you?”

Make it obvious that the answer is HELL YES.

Problem #6: You’re Not Showing Up on Google

What good is a website nobody can find?

If you haven’t done any SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), your site might as well be invisible.

Here’s how to fix that:

  • Use the right keywords: “plumber in Sheffield”, “boiler repair Leeds”, etc.
  • Add those keywords to your homepage, services, and titles
  • Get links from local directories (Yell, Yelp, Checkatrade, etc.)
  • Post regular content (like this blog!)

The better Google understands what you do and where you do it, the higher you’ll rank—and the more work you’ll get.

Problem #7: You’re Not Showing What Makes You Better

Be honest:

What makes you different from every other business like yours?

If your website doesn’t answer that, you’re blending in. You’re a beige wall in a room full of beige walls.

Maybe you:

  • Offer same-day service
  • Always clean up after yourself
  • Use premium parts
  • Answer the phone every time
  • Have over 200 five-star reviews

SHOUT ABOUT IT.

Let your visitors know what makes you the no-brainer choice.

Problem #8: No Lead Capture System

Not everyone who visits your site is ready to buy. That’s fine.

But what’s not fine? Letting them leave without getting any of their info.

Add a simple lead capture:

  • “Grab our free guide: 5 Ways to Stop a Leak Before It Gets Worse”
  • “Get 10% off your first service—enter your email below”
  • “Book a free callback”

Then follow up.

Most leads don’t buy straight away. But with a follow-up? Now you’re playing the long game.

How To Fix It All (Without Losing Your Mind)

Let’s recap:

If your website isn’t bringing in work, it’s probably because:

  1. It’s not built to sell
  2. The copy is too vague
  3. You’re missing strong CTAs
  4. It sucks on mobile
  5. There’s no trust built
  6. It doesn’t show up on Google
  7. You’re not showing what makes you different
  8. You’re not capturing leads

Now, you can either:

❌ Keep doing what you’re doing and hope it magically starts working
✅ Or fix these things and start turning clicks into customers
